What's going on?
What's happening with the California bar?
Here’s the lowdown: starting in 2025, Kaplan is taking over from the NCBE and stepping in to run the California bar exam.
Why? Money problems. The California Bar Association faces a $24 million deficit. By moving away from NCBE, the bar should save up to $$$ by ditching expensive testing centres and moving things online.
What are the biggest changes for you, the Cal Bar test-taker?
1) Remote testing - Not everyone's cup of team, but brilliant in many ways for many people.
2) Multiple choice questions are now be written by Kaplan and not the time-tested, well-known NCBE(!)

About that…
I'm worried about that new multichoice section…
You're not alone. There are many people just like you who are also worried as this is completely new for everyone.
Here's what we know:
1) The questions will test the same seven subjects as before: Civil Procedure, Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Evidence, Real Property, and Torts.
2) There will be 200 questions, tested in one day over 4 sessions (2-morning sessions and 2-afternoon sessions)
3) They won't be written by the NCBE
4) They will be written by Kaplan
What should I do?!
So how can I prepare for this?
It's important to know that this isn't the first time Kaplan has taken over legal qualification exams. In 2018, Kaplan won a contract to take over the UK bar equivalent (called the SQE), delivering their first exam in 2021.
This is where we come in.
